Gregg Chapman - Sound Therapist,

Philosophy

Sound therapy is the therapeutic application of sound frequencies to the mind and body of a person with the focused intention of bringing them into a state of harmony and health.

Sound healing has been around for thousands of years and many spiritual and ancient traditions talk about sound as being the creative force of the universe and all life. Aboriginal songs and dream time stories talk of creation of ancestral beings that brought nature and the world into being through sound. According to Christian beliefs, God spoke the words that created the heavens and earth.

Modern science now supports the ancient beliefs of the power of sound and its use to maintain health and well-being and there are now a wide range of practitioners using a variety of different types of sound therapies.

Sound therapy can be understood using the scientific principles of resonance and entrainment and even more importantly with the focus of intention.

ResonanceAtom

Everything in the universe from the planets, our physical bodies, the chair you are sitting in, to the smallest particles and atoms all exist in a state of vibration and have their own natural resonant frequency. A resonant frequency is the most natural state that an object vibrates to. Nature and all matter likes to find the path of least resistance and seeks the most efficient state.

Every organ, every bone and every cell in the body has its own natural resonant frequency. Together, the resonant frequencies of these organs, bones and cells make up an overall frequency. So when an organ falls out of tune with the rest of the body, disease may set in.

It is interesting to break this word into ‘dis’ ‘ease’. In other words not at ease or harmony with the whole.

Think of it like an orchestra, when one instrument falls out of tune, it can affect the whole orchestra. We have all experienced resonance when we meet someone for the first time, we may feel immediately in tune with that person or we may feel unease.

EntrainmentGeeseformation

Entrainment is where an object (such as a Didgeridoo, tuning fork, voice or drum) with a more powerful rhythmic vibration causes another object to synchronise with the rhythm of the first object.

It is difficult to sing in tune in a choir if the person next to you is out of tune and louder than you. Entrainment can also be seen when birds fly in formation and flap their wings at the same time. Women who work together may find that their menstrual cycles synchronise.

Intention

Probably the most important and crucial aspect to sound therapy and the healing process is the focused intention of the practitioner and also of the client being treated.

We can say ‘I love you’ and truly mean it or we can say it with a completely different intention.

Jonathan Goldman, author of ‘Healing Sounds‘ has developed the following formula in relation to emotional healing and sound.

Frequency + Intention = Healing

This means that by focusing on thought and intention while being subjected to therapeutic sound gives extra power to the healing process and manifestation of the intention.

Everything in the world and universe exists in a state of vibration and holds energy including our thoughts and words.

Research by Dr Masaru Emoto reveals that thoughts and words can influence the crystalline structure of frozen water crystals. He found that words such as ‘Thank you’ and ‘Love’ caused water crystals to form into beautiful structures. Similarly water samples exposed to classical music such as Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake made beautiful water crystals. He also found that water samples exposed to words such as ‘You Fool‘ and Heavy metal could not form into water crystals and look very unpleasant.

What is interesting is that our bodies are made up of around 70% water which is about the same as the Earth and that water is an excellent conductor for sound.

How does Didgeridoo Sound Therapy work?

The Didgeridoo emits sounds and vibrations that fall in the frequency range from close to 0Hz up to around 1000Hz, didjrangeas can be seen from the image below.

What is interesting is that our brain waves are in the range from 2 - 20 Hz, therefore the Didgeridoo can help our body and mind to relax, and reach deep meditation, providing the optimum conditions for self healing.

The frequency range of the Didgeridoo is much less intense than the ultrasound used by medical practitioners and although there seems to be little or no scientific evidence, the Didgeridoo seems to have similar therapeutic benefits to the physical body.

Didgeridoo Sound Therapy works in three main ways.

1. The vibrations travel effortlessly through the body giving an internal and

external massage. Through the process of entrainment, the vibrations

synchronise the body to a state of harmony.

2. Lowers the frequency of brain waves which promotes relaxation and gives the mind, body and soul the opportunity to self heal.

3. Provides the opportunity to focus on what you want to achieve and to clear out any stagnant emotions that need to be released.

As Didgeridoo Sound Therapy is 100% safe, it may be effective for just about any condition as it works to provide the mental, physical and spiritual aspects of the body with the opportunity to re-harmonise with the whole.
